Money or Passion?

I recently discovered something extremely interesting to me. I asked myself the question: Why do I work as hard as I do? The answer was simply ‘Passion’ and I wanted to explore this a little today. I have been watching a lot of videos and listening to a podcasts and audiobooks about social media marketing and entrepreneurship. Much of this content deals with how to sell, make money and run a business, all knowledge I crave but not for the reasons you may think. I want to know how to promote myself, my films and projects that I work on for the artistic reward, not financial. I want to know how to create something that will appeal to people and ultimately communicate whatever message I am trying to communicate.

I have been working under the guise of ‘Jake Waby Productions’ since 2008 producing videos for family, friends and clients, I have never charged an awful lot because I have one simple philosophy  – earn enough to live and create. At this point in my life all that matters to me is that I can survive creating and learning, evolving my art. Don’t get me wrong I don’t let people take the p*** – but I am very reasonable. With every promo video I make, I learn something new that I can apply to everything else I am doing.

I guess my point is, at this time in my life (and this is different for everyone, and something that I’m sure will constantly be changing and evolving) I know what I want and what my aim is. And that is to refine my craft, learn how to tell stories in the most effective way and live, get to know myself and the world around me. That is what I want right now.

What do you want from you life at this moment? Don’t worry, you won’t be stuck with this decision but I implore you to figure it out. You might want GREAT work/ life balance and enough money to support your family and be comfortable. Wonderful, you know what you want. You might want to be richer than Richard Branson. Great, you go get em. You may even just want a simple life. Every single one of these is valid. As long as you are getting what you want out of life, you are winning. If you aren’t, make a change.

The realisation that I am a workaholic but for the WORK is the best news ever for me. I am so pleased that I am able to travel, see new things and continue discovering in this crazy world while doing something I adore.

‘Be spectacularly great at what you do. Wear your passion on your sleeve and hold your heart in the palm of your hand. And work hard. Really hard.’
